Introduction
The chemical engineering profession and reviews the main systems of units and related features. The chapter is organized to provide newcomers with a view of what chemical engineering is. Perhaps the first question a student who considers enrolling in a chemical engineering major has in mind is: What is chemical engineering about? This chapter begins with addressing this question. Next, the system of units and how to carry out conversions between units are reviewed.
This is followed by an explanation of the use of an appropriate number of significant figures in calculations. The concept of dimensional homogeneity and how it can be used to identify valid and invalid equations are explained. Next, the major features of a typical process, including process streams and their identification though a variety of process variables (properties) units, are defined. Then, types of manometers and how to calculate pressure based on the type of manometer used are explained. Finally, process classification and introduction to the basic forms of material and energy balances are provided.
