Commercial Refrigeration for Air Conditioning Technicians

This book is intended for refrigeration and air-conditioning (AC) technicians, as well as advanced AC students. Commercial refrigeration, as a distinct subject, is taught in only about 10% of the schools that offer HVACR programmes. As a result, few AC students or technicians are exposed to this related technology.

Commercial Refrigeration for Air Conditioning Technicians

The industry certainly requires AC-trained technicians. AC technicians, on the other hand, will be more valuable to their companies and customers if they also understand commercial refrigeration.

The subject matter and format of this book are the result of a 60-hour course I designed for the National Association of Power Engineers' Washington, D.C. chapter (NAPE).

The first six of fourteen chapters combine a review of refrigeration theory with an introduction to how those principles are specifically applied to commercial refrigeration equipment. Refrigeration concepts are compared to those of AC whenever possible. This makes it easier for HVACR students and technicians to apply what they've learned in the classroom to the field of commercial refrigeration.

Chapter 7 applies the knowledge gained in the first six chapters to the diagnosis of nine common refrigeration system problems. It also includes a diagnostic chart that the reader can use both in class and on the job. Troubleshooting instructions are also included in Chapter 8 on motor controls. The commercial refrigeration industry has been at the forefront of developing retrofitting practises for replacing CFC and HCFC refrigerants. As a result, Chapter 9 covers retrofitting as well as the related practises of recovery, evacuation, and charging.
