I attempted to combine the best of Western and Eastern psychology in this book. I am grateful to Drs. Aaron Beck and Albert Ellis for developing systematic methods to uproot destructive thought patterns, as well as Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn for developing the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction programme, which has allowed mindfulness meditation practises to be applied to the relief of a variety of medical and psychological conditions. Drs. Zindel Segal, Mark Williams, John Teasdale, and John McQuaid, as well as Paula Carmona, have combined mindfulness practises and cognitive restructuring to treat depression, while Dr. Jeffrey Brantley has used mindfulness to treat anxiety.

I am grateful to the students of all ages at the University of Maryland for diligently and graciously experimenting with the practises in this book over the years, allowing me to better understand how to teach these practises.
